The importance of Marriage

A family is at the centre of God’s plan for the happiness, well being and progress of His children. The Word of God teaches us that God established families from the very beginning, starting with the  marriage of Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:18). Jesus Christ also taught that marriage is holy and essential to God’s plan (Mark 10:6-9).

Marriage is much more than a social arrangement, a physical and emotional pairing, or a financial partnership. It is a learning and growing experience meant to help in still in our lives character lessons and spiritual truths that would be difficult to learn any other way. Through marriage we learn this lessons through experience, a much deeper level.

  • Marriage teaches us to love. 1 John 4:16 teaches to emulate God’s defining characteristic which is to love each other.
  • Marriage teaches commitment. Jesus Christ showed emptied His glory, might and splendour He shared with God the Father and came to earth in flesh, and gave His life and assuring us He will never leave nor forsake us (Philippians 2:5-8, Hebrews 7:25-27). He showed His commitment to us by offering the supreme sacrifice. Jesus Christ is the living example of the kind of commitment partners should share in marriage and the king of commitment we should have toward Him.
  • Marriage teaches sharing and sacrifice. When married people are focused on the needs, happiness and well-being of the each other, it’s remarkable how well they’ll get along. Nether is focused on his or her own wants above the other, but on sharing and sacrificing. Jesus Christ gave His own life, that we might share eternal life with Him in the family of God (Romans 8:29, Hebrews 2:11).
